Frequently asked questions about emergency financial assistance texas

  • I'm sorry, I don't know what a splint is.. but if you have been diagnosed with TMJ then yes your smile may have changed a little bit because of the jaw realignments. If you've had oral surgery to correct TMJ, then your smile should have significantly improved. If you have not had facial or oral surgery and think you may need to, go to your dentist and ask them to refer you to an oral surgeon. Once you see the surgeon, he can help you determine the best route whether it may be proceeding with surgery, or by wearing braces. But if you have TMJ you will most likely need surgery. Unfortunately most insurances will not cover this process because they consider it to be cosmetic rather than facial. I recommend going to the emergency room and telling them you have jaw pains and it hurts to chew or open/close your mouth.. this way they can diagnose you with TMJ and you will have it on record to submit to your insurance company. This surgery is quite expensive and the cheapest I've found so far is where I live in Texas yet is still $15,000. So if you plan on getting the surgery, go to your dentist to get referred to an oral surgeon, and talk to him there to find out what hospital he will do the surgery at and then go to that hospital's financial aid/assistance building. This surgery takes a year and sometimes more to prepare for due to bone growth, braces and other things.. so get started NOW! Also look up Orthognathic surgery for more information and ask your dentist about it.
  • President Signs USA PATRIOT Improvement and Reauthorization Act "The law allows our intelligence and law enforcement officials to continue to share information. It allows them to continue to use tools against terrorists that they used against -- that they use against drug dealers and other criminals. It will improve our nation's security while we safeguard the civil liberties of our people. The legislation strengthens the Justice Department so it can better detect and disrupt terrorist threats. And the bill gives law enforcement new tools to combat threats to our citizens from international terrorists to local drug dealers." -- President George W. Bush March 9, 2006 Safeguarding America: President Bush Signs Patriot Act Reauthorization On March 9, 2006, President Bush Signed The USA PATRIOT Improvement And Reauthorization Act Of 2005. Since its enactment in October 2001, the Patriot Act has been vital to winning the War on Terror and protecting the American people. The legislation signed today allows intelligence and law enforcement officials to continue sharing information and using the same tools against terrorists already employed against drug dealers and other criminals. While safeguarding Americans' civil liberties, this legislation also strengthens the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) so that it can better detect and disrupt terrorist threats, and it also gives law enforcement new tools to combat threats. America still faces dangerous enemies, and no priority is more important to the President than protecting the American people without delay. The Patriot Act Closes Dangerous Law Enforcement And Intelligence Gaps The Patriot Act Has Accomplished Exactly What It Was Designed To Do - It Has Helped Us Detect Terrorist Cells, Disrupt Terrorist Plots, And Save American Lives. The Patriot Act has helped law enforcement break up terror cells in Ohio, New York, Oregon, and Virginia. The Patriot Act has helped in the prosecution of terrorist operatives and supporters in California, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois Washington, and North Carolina. The Patriot Act Authorizes Vital Information Sharing To Help Law Enforcement And Intelligence Officials Connect The Dots Before Terrorists Strike. The Patriot Act enables necessary cooperation and information sharing by helping to break down legal and bureaucratic walls separating criminal investigators from intelligence officers. The Patriot Act Eliminates Double Standards By Allowing Agents To Pursue Terrorists With The Same Tools They Use Against Other Criminals. Before the Patriot Act, it was easier to track a drug dealer's phone contacts than a terrorist's phone contacts, and it was easier to obtain a tax cheat's credit card receipts than to trace the financial support of an al-Qaida fundraiser. The Patriot Act corrected these double standards - and America is safer as a result. The Patriot Act Adapts The Law To Modern Technology. The Patriot Act allows Internet service providers to disclose customer records voluntarily to the government in emergencies involving an immediate risk of death or serious physical injury and permits victims of hacking crimes to request law enforcement assistance in monitoring trespassers on their computers. The Patriot Act Preserves Our Freedoms And Upholds The Rule Of Law. The legislation signed today adds over 30 new significant civil liberties provisions. The Patriot Act Reauthorization Safeguards Our Nation The Patriot Act Reauthorization Creates A New Assistant Attorney General for National Security. By creating a new Assistant Attorney General for National Security, this legislation fulfills a critical recommendation of the WMD Commission. This will allow the Justice Department to bring its national security, counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and foreign intelligence surveillance operations under a single authority. The Patriot Act Reauthorization Tackles Terrorism Financing. This bill enhances penalties for terrorism financing and closes a loophole concerning terrorist financing through "hawalas" (informal money transfer networks) rather than traditional financial institutions. The Patriot Act Reauthorization Protects Mass Transportation. This bill provides clear standards and tough penalties for attacks on our land- and water-based mass transportation systems, as well as commercial aviation. The Patriot Act Reauthorization Combats Methamphetamine Abuse The Patriot Act Reauthorization Includes The Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act Of 2005. This bill introduces commonsense safeguards that will make many ingredients used in methamphetamine manufacturing more difficult to obtain in bulk and easier for law enforcement to track. For example, the bill places limits on large-scale purchases of over-the-counter drugs that are used to manufacture methamphetamines- and requires stores to keep these ingredients behind the counter or in locked display cases. It increases penalties for smuggling and selling methamphetamines.
  • I believe the Patriot Act to a element! no longer thoroughly! Please forgive me yet, I worked l. a. County clinical and Police Investigations and Nursing for twenty-four Years! So - What am i able to declare! i'm professional Cop! everywhere I even have Lived besides - I even have buddies that are law enforcement officers - Even right here in Arkansas the place we merely moved to 3 months in the past! Obama cut back the Missile protection funds - thoroughly! That took out Sky internet! Now, i know that maximum out right here won't in any respect know approximately Sky internet - yet the place i'm now working - It replaced into somewhat powerful in Communications and protection - that's needed! people have no concept what the Missile protection device rather replaced into! It replaced into national protection! no longer in trouble-free terms for the country - yet, companies besides - like the place I paintings! Peace to All and God Bless! Jane.
  • It's a way for the authorities to detain you without court orders or legal council. Even if they only suspect you, they can lock you up. so...don't speak negatively about your government commrad....it's very easy to make you appear to be a terrorist.
  • It is an act to protect the Americans from terriosts...
  • You really must go to school at least once a week.
  • My spouse has recently been in the hospital for a couple of months now. We have three children and I am the only one working at the moment. I live in Texas and am in need of TANF and food stamps, maybe even welfare. I work a lot and am unable to visit these offices in person so my only other choise is to either mail in an application for approval, or to do it online. Is there a way for me to submit an application online? If I have to mail in the application, would I be able to receive benefits without having to visit the office location? Is there any information or thoughts you might have that might help me regarding assistance with clothing, food, paying bills, etc. Please answer nicely, no rude comments about my situation or anything about shoulda, coulda, woulda....Looking for help. Thank you and God bless.
  • fae - I appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks for making me feel even worse than I already am. I'm doing the best I can at the moment and with the hours I work am unable to contact these offices during their office hours. If you don't have any positive response to this, please don't waste my or your time.
  • I'm not aware of your situation but if you're in need of help from the state, you're most likely going to need to contact them directly and in person. The reason for this is because there has been too many issues happening with invalid use of SSN#s and so forth. You basically have to prove you are who you say you are which means showing a driver's license and another form of ID because you are dealing with the government. For what it's worth, I'm a graduate student studying a career in management. Yes it's an inconvenience but you may be able to contact the SS office and explain the situation to set up an appt to see someone. It will require you explaining it to your manager this needs to be done for a family emergency and I'm sure they'll let you go and make up the hours. Something else you may want to look into is financial help from the hospital. Discuss a payment plan with them. I don't know if you have insurance or not but that isn't the point. Talk to someone in the billing office at the hospital and ask about paying bills on a fee that you can afford. Make the point that you are head of household (only person working) and have dependent children. As long as you are honest with them about your situation and make every attempt at paying your bill they will work with you. Best of luck and hope your husband gets well soon.
  • That sounds so unorigional, like the guys on the corner with a cardboard sign "I only need 47cents" Pleasssssse! These guys step out of cars with their "starbucks" every morning headed for their particular good "fishing" spot and they troll up and down the freeway off ramps looking dejected and dragging their limbs (alot of contortionists) this is a buisness! Anyone needing information just needs to contact Social Services in their county,You need to jump the hoops like everyone else, go out and make it happen.
  • In California, you ought to bypass interior the welfare workplace and fill out the workplace work then consult with a worker. She asks for particular documentation too. i'm sorry that that is happening on your loved ones. in the adventure that your spouse has an prolonged restoration technique and can't paintings for a 300 and sixty 5 days or extra she are in a position to acquire social protection advantages. maximum suitable needs to you and your loved ones.
  • department of human resources i think its dhr.com or somethign like that. you can do mostly everything on line. (i live here in texas also)
  • GALVESTON — The crushing news came last month as Maria Sanchez was being prepared for surgery to remove a banana-size tumor along her spine that had crept between her vertebrae. Unable to use her right hand because of the growing tumor, Sanchez, 24, had been at the University of Texas Medical Branch's John Sealy Hospital for six days when, she said, a Spanish-speaking doctor told her she had to leave the hospital immediately because she was an illegal immigrant. The doctor said she should have surgery in Mexico, according to Sanchez. Sanchez's hospital records state that she was discharged because she was "an undocumented pt (patient) with no insurance." Records show that Sanchez underwent at least one medical procedure and surgery was scheduled before she was dismissed without warning Jan. 12. After being discharged, Sanchez called her husband, Luis Aguillon, a legal U.S. resident, who arrived at the hospital to find his wife and his mother sitting on her bed crying. "They treated us like animals, like dogs or something," said Aguillon, 36, an unemployed welder. Sanchez's abrupt expulsion raises ethical and legal questions about the treatment of low-income patients with life-threatening conditions. A doctor who reviewed Sanchez's medical records for the Houston Chronicle said they showed that UTMB ejected a woman with a potentially fatal condition because she was unable to pay. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metr... Aguillon finally moved from Galveston to Houston so he could qualify for care at Ben Taub General Hospital, where she is being treated. If she were a U.S. Citizen living in Mexico, would a Mexican Hospital treat her, without insurance or ability to pay? I will be glad to volunteer to drive her to the Mexican consulate, where she can then petition her country of origin for assistance. If they refuse to help her, perhaps the attention drawn by such an international event would begin to force Mexico to take responsibilty for it's own citizens instead of demanding that America be responsible for them.
  • An American having a heart attack, car accident or stroke cannot get emergency medical care in Mexico...and it has been thus for decades...without forking over upfront money.‘”They treated us like animals, like dogs or something,” said Aguillon, 36, an unemployed welder.’ I bet they can’t wait to get back to Mexico where they won’t be treated like animals. He is an unemployed welder. Isn’t it time Mexico takes responsibity for it’s own citizens.
  • Her husband is unemployed, and she is illegal. Who does her husband think is going to have to pay the bill for his wife's surgery, since he clearly can't? "Sanchez's abrupt expulsion raises ethical and legal questions about the treatment of low-income patients with life-threatening conditions." It has nothing to do with her being a low-income patient being denied treatment. Somebody finally stood up and said, "You can't be treated here, you don't belong here." I guess the financial ruin so many hospitals across the country means nothing to those with the "ethical and legal questions." Are they going to pay for the low income illegal aliens to keep the hospitals from closing due to not having the funds to keep running?
  • rather lots comparable to yours different than for one small substitute: a million) David Tennent 2) Christopher Eccleston 3) Tom Baker 4) Patrick Troughton 5) Jon Pertwee 6) Peter Davison 7) William Hartnell 8) Peter Cushing 9) Sylvester McCoy 10) Colin Baker 11) Paul McGann
  • You may find this hard to believe but Mexico has very good doctors especially plastic surgeons.People flock there annually to go under the knife for a fraction of what it costs in the USA.
  • Thats good news. Illegal aliens bankrupt american hospitals, so she doesnt get care big deal. A few dead illegals is nothing to cry about.
  • My cat is about 8 months old, recently she has been chewing her hair on her back off, i have bought anti-itching spray for cats and soaked her in it and nothing seems to work, and then just yesterday my roommate informs me that she is leaking out of her bottom, like clear cloudy stuff, almost like it would be discharge and sometimes it is even green. I cant afford to take her to the vet at this point in time, and i am coming to a loss as to what to do for her, do you know what could be wrong?
  • There are several reasons a kitty chews its fur off. The most common are from fleas or other skin parasites or stress. Skip the anti-inch spray and take her to the vet to have the cause diagnosed. Now she has a discharge. Any discharge is not normal, but one that is colored is alarming. This definitely needs to be checked by a vet. Even if one of us was a veterinarian, we could not diagnose her over the internet. After many years of having kitties and treating a wide range of illnesses and injuries--I know what to panic over and what to calmly make a vet appointment for--this is a panic situation and if she were my kitten, we'd be on the way to the vet. I know money for emergencies can be tight... I have been there--I have treated elderly and ill cats 2 at a time. Here are some suggestions: Call your local humane society or rescues in your area and see if they can assist you with the vet bill. Many reserve funds just for pet emergencies such as this. In return for financial assistance, offer to volunteer with their organization or donate much needed items such as food, litter, cleaning products, towels, sheets, etc. Look into Care Credit. Care Credit is a credit card just for medical expenses, including veterinary. The link is below, you can see what vet offices accept this card in your area and apply online. It's tax time. Do you expect to get a refund? If so, see if a family member, your roommate or friend will lend you enough money for the vet visit until you get your refund. Talk to your vet. Explain the situation and see if he/she will treat kitty if you can pay part of the bill. Unfortunately since so many vets have extended credit only to have the accounts go unpaid, they will no longer treat clients unless payment can be made on the spot. This hurts those of us who could and would make payments until a bill is paid in full--the reason I have a Care Credit card. Please get kitten to the vet soon. Purrs to you and kitten.
  • If you had a much older cat, it might be understandable that your financial situation has changed. But this is still a kitten, and I agree you shouldn't have gotten her if you weren't going to take care of her. The color green indicates infection. These ALL require vet visits. She's a bit young for pyometra, but if she does have it, it's easily treated with antibiotics (not expensive) but it's also a condition that will kill quickly and painfully if not addressed. You need to either get her seen today to prevent this from happening, or you need to see if a cat rescue near you would take her in. If she's never seen a vet at all, you should be ashamed. The itching could be anything from allergies to fleas. All this stuff is easily taken care of, but not if someone wants the answers here. She needs a vet...period.
  • By the time you become aware of a change in your cat's behavior the cat has been in distress for quite some time. No way to tell what's wrong of course, vomiting is a symptom of many things, possible poisoning. The diagnosis needs to made by the veterinarian. To do? Go outside and get the cat into the house. Take the cat in to the veterinarian ASAP.
  • Is your cat fixed? If she has an intact uterus then I would be very concerned that she has pyrometria which is a fatal infection of the uterus that infects 30% of unspayed cats. If you cannot afford a vet, take her to a no-kill shelter or contact your emergency vet and ask if they can take payment plans. It is illegal to not seek help for a sick animal, so move fast before you lose your cat forever.
  • You really need to take your cat to the vet. I may be wrong but it sounds like your cat may have some kind of a parisite due top the green discharge. As for the chewing the hair of ..The cat could be allergic to something or have hoit spots.
  • The cat needs a Vet ASAP, and if you can't afford one, you shouldn't have gotten the cat in the first place. That is only a part of responsible pet ownership.
  • The discharge may be caused by a uterine infection (pyometria). This is very dangerous, and if not treated can be fatal. You need to find a Vet asap.
  • Martha, a friend of mine, has a really cute little Siamese... the cat was a very recent rescue and was very sick (taken from a hoarder); she ended up costing $1500 to save. She escaped a couple of days ago through a window that an errant handyman left open. We're assuming she's pregnant. Martha (and myself; I live nearby) lives in the sticks and the cheapest place in the entire -state- charges $230 for a cat spay. None of the low-cost spay-and-neuter programs open until the fall. There is nothing we can do right now. I helped pay for the cat's vet bills and can't afford to pay more for a spay; neither can she, since she's still reeling from the previous vet trip. We know how overpopulated cats are and it's horrible, but there's really nothing we can do. That said, we need some information about cat pregnancies. Any information would be great. Thanks. I explained the situation so I'd get less "omg get an emergency spay" comments because it's simply not possible. If it were, it would be done. She will be spayed as soon as the funds are available.
  • Hannah, I don't feel comfortable announcing my location on the Internet. However, yes, that is the only place in the state. We have contacted countless shelters and rescue groups for information on low-cost spays and none of them are willing to help unless she gives the cat to them. She doesn't want to do that; she loves the cat very much.
  • Angela, she's alright and not ill at all anymore. That was about a month ago; she made a full recovery and is extremely energetic now (she's about 2 years old). Martha said she won't take the kittens to the shelter; she'll adopt them out of her house... I just need info about the pregnancy itself; what to expect, etc. We are both responsible pet owners who have never let our animals get pregnant; this is just a terrible fluke.
  • Again... it was not a rescue organization that Martha got the cat from. She got the cat right from the hoarder because she went to the hoarder's house and saw the cat was in terrible shape (the hoarder has no more animals now). As for what was wrong - she had eye infections, a shattered tail, a missing paw pad, ear infections in both ears, anal discharge, severe diarrhea, had lost a load of weight, dehydration, etc. She had to stay in the animal hospital for a solid week. Just a slew of nasty stuff. She's always kept indoors, so that's not an issue. Good to know about feeding her more later on. When will we know for sure she's pregnant?
  • Hannah, sorry, but I'm not going to. You can go ahead and keep assuming all you want, but I was raised to never give out my location, and I won't. My state is very small; it's not as if I live in Texas. Trust me, I have done all the searching I possibly could and called every shelter and rescue organization within a two-hour drive, including those outside the state. There is nothing that can be done. I will stop responding to you until you answer my question and stop harping on the fact that I "want a litter" or "aren't looking hard enough."
  • If you can't find anywhere who provides low-cost spay services, you can always find out if any of the vets are willing to work out a financial plan to help so you don't have to pay the full amount. You might be able to find a local humane society who can provide a lower cost service or possibly refer you to somewhere than can. Just type in "humane society [your city or state]" If you end up following through with the pregnancy and birth, below are some links that will help you with questions you will have throughout the process. http://cats.about.com/od/reproduction/a/... http://www.howtodothings.com/pets-and-an... http://moggycat13.tripod.com/id85.html http://www.cat-pregnancy-report.com/ http://www.ehow.com/how_2063753_care-pregnant-cat.html http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+2138&aid=893 http://www.myhealthycat.com/cats-giving-birth-to-kittens.html http://www.cat-pregnancy-report.com/cat-giving-birth.html http://cat-care.suite101.com/article.cfm/feline_labour_and_delivery http://www.wikihow.com/Help-a-Cat-Give-Birth Unfortunately, I don't personally have experience with pregnant cats or kittens being born, but many people on this forum do so if the links don't help, hopefully someone here can. What I can recommend is to keep a local veterinarian office number nearby, and also an emergency clinic in case she gives birth outside of normal office hours. Good luck! EDIT: No problem...If you would like more, just let me know. I found a lot more, but Yahoo! Answers would only let me post 10.
  • The place that rescued her should have spayed her. Especially if it cost 1,500 dollars! What was wrong with her that made it cost 1,500 and did you guys have to pay that? The place should have paid to fix her up and then adopted her out for a rational amount. Were you roped into claiming she was yours and paying all the medical bills? If this is the case and you are taking her to this place as her Vet, I'd switch. They are emotionally manipulateing her and did not spay her as one would expect. I'd still love to hear was what done with her that cost so much. You'll just want to keep her indoors, feed her a little more weeks from now, and then set up a quiet hidden place with low traffic, maybe in a room that's barely used.. towards the end so she can be in that quiet place to give birth and keep the kittens some place with low traffic for the first weeks/months. Added: All cats show late. The Big Cats don't have signs until days before they deliver. Domesticated cats put on weight ( there are varibles so I can't specify when) [ might gain weight two weeks in, might be about a month in, might be a month and a half, might not be until two weeks before delivery.. it's frustrating], in the last weeks some people can distingush lumps. Some places will X-Ray your cat to check on the Kittens and get a proper count. Some cats nipples change days before they deliver. Everything is wildly varible for alot of factors. The net says a cat should deliver after about 63-69 days but some cats seem to deliver after about a month and a half and others take three months. 63-69 would be like 2 months and a week.
  • I know it sounds like a lot to do a spay right now. But in the long run its cheaper then letting her have kittens and caring for everyone for 3 months. It WILL cost more for extra high quality food for mom and what she should really worry about is the fact there is a very real possibility that this cat (due to her rough start) can have SERIOUS complications in pregnancy and delivery - what will your friend do if mom needs an emergency c-section ($1,500+) or other complications? And if that happens and the cat doesn't get to the vet, she will die and the kittens too. Also the kittens need to be kept for a minimum of 10-12 weeks and ideally have their first shots and worming before you rehome. Your friend is looking at an easy $400+ to care for a pregnant cat IF delivery and nursing go ok - if not, its gonna cost a lot more. After talking to her about the high price that may be coming up, I strongly suggest you just take the cat to the shelter and they will either spay her now and rehome, or they will foster her till the kittens are born. IMO $250 to spay her is cheap compared to the cost of care of a litter of 4 or more kittens.
  • Please tell us in which state you reside. I could provide you with a list of tons of places that emergency spay for that. I don't buy for a second that you know this place is the cheapest in the entire state. Find a rescue organization to help you curb the cost of an emergency spay. My friend did this, and she only had to pay $25 out of pocket for an emergency spay. Either you actually search for a place to do an emergency spay, or you really should consider surrendering the animal. Even my full-cost clinic in Washington does not charge more than $200 for an emergency spay Why not list your state. I told everyone I live in Washington. Even if you live in Wyoming, the least populous state, no one is going to come after you. You are just lying about the 'cheapest in the state' because you either a) want an excuse for a litter or b) do not care enough to actually search. For you to conclude that this place is the 'cheapest in the state' you would have had to ask every place in the state, which is impossible. And I had a friend (the same one who had her cat emergency spayed) who's cat was pregnant and her cay did have a litter. The litter from start to finish, cost her around $500. For all of the kitten food, shots for all the kittens, deworming for all the kittens. So even a couple-hundred dollar spay fee is usually cheaper (and safer for the mother). This was the out-of-pocket cost for HER before the kittens were even old enough to surrender at the shelter. My state is very small; it's not as if I live in Texas. Yeah, well, like I said, even if you lived in Wyoming, the least populous state, no one would find you
  • If everyone was "responsible" and had their cats spayed there would soon be no more cats. Why is is irresponsible to allow a cat to have kittens if they are wanted? We have had lots of wanted kittens over the years and found loving homes for all of them. It is totally selfish to expect the incoming cat to be spayed before she has had her kittens, even if she is young and they were "accidental". Wait and do it afterwards. There is no reason to anticipate aggression - if it happens, then separate them, but they may get on really well and help to care for each others offspring. It is very sad that you obviously think that a pedigree cat is somehow better or worthy of better treatment than the rest - we have had both and believe me cats don't know the difference. Would you turn out the maid's baby to make way for the lady's? Incidentally, do not be surprised if your cat ignores your nest box and chooses somewhere else for the birth!
  • All you can do is wait it out and take the babies to a shelter after theyve weened from the mother. Good luck and I hope the mother and babies make it after her illness.
  • Here is some reading for you, good luck! http://www.cat-pregnancy-report.com/ Also, so strange a rescue would adopt out an intact animal.
  • wrote a Children's Charter that advocated protection of every child regardless of race or gender began construction of the Boulder Dam (later renamed Hoover Dam); expanded civil service coverage He appointed a commission which set aside 3 million acres (12,000 km²) of national parks and 2.3 million acres (9,000 km²) of national forests closed certain tax loopholes for the wealthy Signed the Emergency Relief and Construction Act, the nation's first Federal unemployment assistance. Increased public works spending. Some of Hoover's efforts to stimulate the economy through public works are as follows: Asked Congress for a $400 million increase in the Federal Building Program Directed the Department of Commerce to establish a Division of Public Construction in December 1929 Increased subsidies for ship construction through the Federal Shipping Board Urged the state governors to also increase their public works spending, though many failed to take any action. Signed the Federal Home Loan Bank Act establishing the Federal Home Loan Bank system to assist citizens in obtaining financing to purchase a home. Increased subsidies to the nation's struggling farmers with the Agricultural Marketing Act; but with only limited impact. Established the President's Emergency Relief Organization to coordinate local private relief efforts resulting in over 3,000 relief committees across the U.S. Authorized the repatriation to Mexico of 1-2 million people living in barrios throughout California, Texas and Michigan, 60% of whom were U.S. citizens of Mexican-descent, in an effort to ease unemployment. Urged bankers to form the National Credit Corporation to assist banks in financial trouble and protect depositors' money. Actively encouraged businesses to maintain high wages during the Depression, in line with the philosophy, called Fordism, that high wages create prosperity. Most corporations maintained their workers' wages early in the Depression in the hope that more money into the pockets of consumers would end the economic downturn. Signed the Reconstruction Finance Act. This act established the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, which made loans to the states for public works and unemployment relief. In addition, the corporation made loans to banks, railroads and agriculture credit organizations. Raised tariffs. After hearings held by the House Ways and Means Committee generated more than 20,000 pages of testimony regarding tariff protection, Congress responded with legislation that Hoover signed despite some misgivings. Instead of protecting American jobs, the Smoot-Hawley tariff is widely blamed for setting off a worldwide trade war which only worsened the country's (and the world's) economic ills.
