Frequently asked questions about illinois credit services

  • I've been unemployed for a little over a year. Unable to find a job, think my previous employer (state of Illinois) might be black-balling me. (Anyone know how to find that out for sure?....and what to do about it?)..Any way, I'm over $13,000 in debt to a major credit card company.....also owe aprox $5500 on a personal loan through a financial institution. The credit card company calls just about every day. I explained my situation to them from the beginning, but it didn't do any good. Now I just don't answer the phone. They've sent three letters saying they will turn me over to their attorneys, or place my account with a third party for collection. I have no money whatsoever or I'd file bankrupcy. Had great credit up until I lost my job. Is there any way out of this mess? I also have insulin dependent diabetes (for the last 20 years) and depression and can't get on any government assistance except foodstamps if that factors into anything. Thanks for all serious answers.
  • for your credit problems go to your local credit counseling service, most states have gov't programs to help folks in your situation. there's not much you can do right now about the credit card company calling you every day, it's within their rights to call you to collect money you owe them. the credit counseling service may offer some suggestions for you to help deal with them though. as far as affording your perscriptions try going to www.pparx.org... they can help you find assistance for your medications. now for your previous employer situation, contact the bureau of labor and industries for your state and talk to them about it. if your employer is in fact black balling you, this is discrimination, it would be very hard to prove but if BOLI contacts your previous employer with these suspicions then they may stop so they don't get in trouble. good luck.
  • First call them up again and explain your situation and they might offer you some alternatives like erasing your interest charges and giving you small payments that you might be able to make - like $20 a month. If that doesn't work, see if you can find a legal aid organization in your area. There are "financial counselor" organizations, but many of them are corrupt, so that might not be a great idea. Try to file bankruptcy. Look at applying for more jobs. Unlikely that a State Employer would be able to blackball you from all jobs in the State. Check the want ads every week and send out 3 or 4 applications every week. In the mean time, volunteer at a local organization to keep busy and make contacts, or take a lower skilled job such as receptionist, janitor, or wharehouse worker.
  • Credit cards are unsecured which means you owe them the money, no they cannot take your things, no they cannot have you arrested. What they can do is call you, constantly asking for payment. They can go to court and get a judgment on you but unless you are talking about thousands most likely that will not happen. No they cannot garnish you wages except in extreme cases. Most statute of limitations are 4-6 years (check your state) after that if they file for a judgment all you have to do is show up and show the SOL has expired, and you will win the judgment . The collection agency's can still bother you but all you have to say is the SOL has expired. NO they cannot then re report it on your credit score, unless you make a payment, then the 7 years start again. Best is if the SOL is past, dispute the debt, then they will have to prove that it is indeed correct, most will not since it cost them money that they cannot legally collect.
  • What efforts have you made to get a new job? I highly doubt your old employer is blackballing you....unless they have somehow called every firm in every industry. Where have you looked? Have you prepared a resume? Are you using the internet to find job listings? Are you looking into other careers? Have you contacted any temp agencies? Looked into substitute teaching? Are you looking for a permanent job or ANYTHING that can make ends meet? Remember, where there is a McDonald's, there is a job opportunity (granted, its not the best opportunity....but income is better than no income) Getting a job is priority number 1. Once you get a job, you can consolidate your debt. However, there are also companies that specialize in negotiating debt with credit card companies and they usually offer free consultations. (Legality varies by state)
  • well first off if you're over 5,000 dollars in debt, they will take you to court, that's the magic number. But if it's still at the credit card company you're in good shape, it's not at a collection agency yet. I highly suggest you call a debt consolidation company, like debtserve to consolidate all of your payments into one, htey can stop hte harrasing phone calls and usually eliminate any interest. What I wonder is how can you have been unemployed for a year? Sounds like you need to lower your standards and take something, if you hvae govt work experience you should be able to find something.... good luck
  • File For Bankruptcy
  • Foodstamps is better than nothing... as for your previous employer... get a phone with a recorder (like an answering machine or something), call them and pretend to be an employer checking references and ask some questions. If they are saying anything illegal, you'll have it on tape. Then you can sue them. Then you'll have money.
  • Can you take out a consolidation loan from your bank and start paying a low monthly rate until you get back on your feet? Don't go through one of those companies to consolidate debt they will rip you off. Or, you could claim bankruptcy. I am not sure why you have been out of work for so long but you could take something below your skill level and get some income coming in. I hope you don't have children.
  • Well, maybe, if you cannot find work in your chosen profession, and you are this desperate, it is time to look outside your profession, at this point, ANY JOB is a good job. Another solution may be to look outside your state, or area. I doubt that your former employer is that interested in you to contact out of state offices.
  • Get a job and get back on your feet. Worry about the other bills after you are situated, remember its never too late.
  • If you begin attending WIU in the Fall 2010 or Spring 2011: For the Macomb Campus, your total tuition cost for 15 total credit hours, including fees is: $4,745 For the Quad Cities Campus, your total tuition cost for 15 total credit hours, including fees is: $3,877
  • To the guy who spoke back Michigan - for engineering? do not visit Michigan for Engineering... the foremost software is at Michigan State. comparable element with Texas... you are able to pick to be at A&M. Leaves you with Case Western, Georgia Tech, Illinois, and Carnegie Mellon. All are great engineering colleges. while you're ineffective set on engineering, all could be great alternatives. even even with the incontrovertible fact that, while you at the instant are not a hundred% effective, i could gravitate in direction of Illinois or Georgia Tech - they provide greater Non-Engineering majors in case you return to a call to alter to primative anthropology with a minor in shape. yet, having suggested that, i'm biased, as an Alum of Illinois (whats up, that's Hugh Hefner's Alma Mater!), yet you may desire to probable slender your checklist all the way down to 3 and visit them together as classes are in consultation to get a feeling of what you're in for. one greater plug for Illinois - they have the main Nobel Laureates of the universities reported, and HAL develop into geared up there.

  • My credit card account was recently sent to a collections agency by the name of Client Services. They haven't contacted me, but are calling my brother 20 times a day asking for me or my number, and he keeps telling them to stop calling. I know I need to pay my bills, but I'm about to have major surgery and will have to work after I recover. What can I do until then to get them to leave us alone? Is there anyway I can also handle paying off this debt without a huge issue or trip to court? I'm only 22 so any help will do, they debt was accumulated from school, but I got in a bad car accident and it has seriously messed me up. Any help would be great and appreciated. What can I do? Thanks.
  • First of all they are not allowed to contact "anybody" except you. As per the FDCPA, Debt collectors calling outside parties to obtain information on the whereabouts of a person who owes a debt must not reveal that the subject person owes the debt. The collector may only contact these parties once unless the information provided is incomplete or erroneous. Give this bit of info to your brother so he can inform them if they call again. This should stop them cold. Do nothing over the phone with them, PERIOD! doing so does not provide you with a record of events in case you need it. If they do call you, tell them you do not deal with debts over the phone and that all communication is to be done via mail. You can find out more about this agency here at this link. They are known junk debt collectors and have had numeous complainst filed against them with the BBB of Eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois http://www.budhibbs.com/debtcollectorpag... Check to see if the debt is "time barred" in your state. If it is beyond your states SOL, then they have no legal rights to sue you in court. All they can do is "ask" you to pay it. Here is a link to find your states SOL http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/SOL-... Hope this answers your question LEGAL DISCLAIMER: The advice contained herein is for informational purposes only. • As long as the debt collector is unable to contact/locate you....they are allowed, within reason, to contact relatives. This is called "skip tracing." They can only leave "call back" messages and they cannot discuss the nature of why they are calling. You have the right under the Fair Debt Collections Practices act to send what is called a "Cease Communications" letter....They are required by law to stop calling....HOWEVER, if this debt is recent and if it's fairly large, sending this letter might provoke more aggressive collection activity, such as their sending you a summons to go to court...so be careful.
  • Your brother can send them a cease and desist letter and accompany it with a copy of something that shows he lives at that address. If they keep calling after that, he can sue them.
  • First of all, be adult enough to contact them yourself so they will quit bothering your brother. Then work out a settlement or payment plan.

  • 1. Obama was a Illinois State Senator from 1996-2004 * She wanted more money, so he got a second job.* 2. Obama taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago from 1992-2004 *Michelle finally got him a job. 3. As a member of the 109th Congress(Democrat minority), he cosponsered legislation to control conventional weapons * He managed to disarm honest citizens, so now Chicago crime is so bad, the governor is proposing the National Guard come in. 4. As a member of the 110th Congress, he copsonsered legislation regarding lobbying, electoral fraud, climate change, nuclear terrorism and care for military personnel who return from combat. * Co-sponsoring is not leading. Has he no original ideas? 5. As a state senator he sponsered a law enhancing tax credits for low-income workers * Why not just let them keep some of their own money as they earned it. Most low-income people did not even qualify for these so-callled credits. 6. He has negotiated welfare reform and promoted increased subsidies for childcare as a state senator. * Promoted, but did not get them. 7. He led passage on legislation mandating videotaping of homicide interrogations, and a law to monitor racial profiling * Behind a lot of other states. 8. In January 2003, as a state senator he became the chairman of the Health and Human Services Commitee * How could a state senator become chairman of a Congressional committee? 9. In his 2004 election campaign for The U.S. Senate, he won the endorsement of the Illlinois Fraternal Order of Police * And??
  • Argonne Credit Union (ACU), established in 1949, is a not-for-profit full service financial institution. Although originally affiliated with Argonne National Laboratory, ACU is now open to all residents and businesses with branches in Illinois (Will, Dupage, and parts of Cook county) and restricted access lab branches in Idaho. Although Argonne Credit Union has a neighborly appeal it is still a strong institution with over $160 million in assets and over 14,000 members. They are insured by American Share Insurance (ASI), one of the largest private deposit insurers in the nation which means your money is secure. Unlike many financial institutions which only insure each individual, at ACU every savings or checking account you have with them is insured for $250,000. Argonne Credit Union offers savings, checking and loans with solid rates and fewer fees because they are owned by its members and not by stockholders.
  • I am 15 years old and would like to know how to purchase plane tickets, I dont have a driver's licencse or a credit card but money is not an option, I dont have parent permission but I NEED TO GET to Illinois asap... I live in california and I might be able to get permission but ..Im trying to see my girlfriend who moved away again.. I talk to her on the phone.. but I need her to get by, shes the love of my life.. and I need her by my side again.. just to see her face once more =[ I'll have my driver's licence by this summer and that could be an option... but I have no idea how much it'll cost to get from california to Illinois... plz plz help me... Im desperate.. and I know it sounds dumb..and cheesy but this girl is my whole world..her heart is all I ever want in this world, and I will do whatever it takes to hold her again.. I need her love to get by.. I dont know what kind of stuff I need to have to fly.... and what age I have to be... what would be the best thing to do.. I know running away from home sounds a little rash, but I'd be willing to do it to see her again... thanks..
  • Well, I'm in Canada so things may be a bit different up here. I believe you have to be 16 to purchase your own plane tickets, but it could be older. A good way to get around that can be taking a bus or train, as they are normally a lot less strict about those kinds of things. As for your actual reasoning...Do your parents approve of visiting? What about visits every few months, if you can afford it. Maybe she can come to see you too. That way you could save up until you're out of high school, and then move out there. :) It's much better than running away, trust me. It will also show maturity and responcibility to yours and her parents, if you don't act too rash on this. I know it's hard and you just want it NOW, but sometimes acting rash can actually damage future possibilities -- maybe even the relationship. I've been where you are (I'm 20 now), and it's never easy. Looked into running away at your age too, actually, to be with someone I loved. Most important thing to consider right now is what's going to best for the both of you in the long run, not what you feel you want this very minute. Get a plan for the long term and find how it'll work out best. If it's true love, it'll wait and maybe even grow stronger as you work towards the goal. As for pricing and actual details, check out websites for local airlines, bus lines, or train services. They normally have that kind of info on them. Without a credit card you'll probably have to purchase at the actual place.
  • 15? no way u can get a ticket. And even if you get a friend to help you out by buying a ticket-they check for ID and ****. A little free idea thou-if you somehow find a way- get someone to go with you (older than you so they can buy the tickets), then you can give them your bags when you arive to ur destination , and while your "pretending to find your luggage" let them take it past security and out the door. You can go to customer service and say you never recieved luggage :) That's 200$ free-of course u gotta wait a month but hey- money is money. All the luck with your love man, screw what they say, go find ur girl man.
  • no offense buddy, and you probably dont want to hear it from me - but your parents would probably tell you the same thing. firstly, no one should ever make you get to the point where you cant live without them and secondly, youre 15 you ahouls be focusing on school why is it a big deal for you to ask your parents if you can go visit your girlfriend over a school break? why cant she visit you over a school break. youre a minor and running away wont solve anything - they will just drag you back home and then you relaly wont ever get to see her.
